The_Yellow_Canary Who says Its more than just another Element? 2 Sep 19 2008, 10:45 PM EDT by The_Yellow_Canary

Just because we are Carbon-based organisms, doesn't mean we should put Carbon on a pedestal. It is true that Carbon has the rare ability to form long chains (both straight and branched) and, within the framework of these larger structures, transcend its position as "just another element".
However, it is only in conjunction with other elements that Carbon achieves this position. Without Hydrogen,Oxygen, Nitrogen, Sulfur, Phosphorous, and all of the other elements that appear in trace amounts in organic substances, Carbon would be useless.
It is said that no man is an island. This goes for elements too.
